Hey friends!
I am writing this newsletter from Lille, France where I am celebrating my 25th birthday. 🎂 🇫🇷
I know it’s a slightly rogue location, but it’s only 1 hour and 20 mins on the euro star from London, so why not?
Even though 25 is far from old, I still wish I had started many things soon
er. I wish that I started coding from a younger age, started blogging earlier, and started making videos before I was 24.
Everyone has a list of things they wished they did earlier, but as the cliche goes, there is no better time to start than today.
There have been numerous successful people who started a lot later in their lives:
Toni Morrison — Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner, wrote her first novel at 40
Samuel L Jackson — Got his big break in Jungle Fever when he was 43
Henry Ford — Created the Ford Model T at 45
Charles Darwin — Published the Origin of Species when he was 50
Colonel Saunders — Franchised KFC when he was 62
Sure, Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook at 19 and Bill Gates founded Microsoft at 20, but the reality is that the average startup founder is 45.
Anecdotally, I've seen several people transition into data science and tech from other careers. They retrained and pursued something they wanted to do and enjoyed after a decade in a completely different industry. It takes courage to leave something you are comfortable with.
This shows that many people find success in later life. It takes years and decades to figure things out and experiment. Not everyone just stumbles into what they like and want to do early on — that's just the lucky few.
So, if you are thinking of changing fields, starting a side project, or just wanting to learn something new and think it is "too late," I reckon Colonel Saunders would have a little chuckle.
Weekly Favourites ❤️
⚽️ Event — Euros 2024. The Euros started this week, giving me something to watch daily.
🔧 Tool — Headspace. I try to meditate daily to clear my head, encouraging me to slow down. I have been using Headspace for nearly two years, and it's great.
🔧 Tool — Streaks. I also log all my habits I want to track on the streaks app. I find it very useful to have a tracker on the home screen of my phone, guilt-tripping me that I haven’t completed my good habits for the day.
