Good morning, friends! ☀️
Hope everyone had a nice week and was enjoying the sunshine!
I recently watched this video by Travis Media, "Why You'll WASTE The Next 3 Years…"
It got me thinking about the importance of pivots in life. Note that I am saying "pivots" and not "risks."
It's funny because many of our lives are pretty random, yet we usually stay in the same lane given to us. We rarely explore what else is out there.
What Travis says in the video, and something I completely agree with, is that we are often too short-sighted when we want to make significant life choices.
Let's say you are a doctor, nurse, or other health professional. You are now 27 and have realised that you actually love data science (who wouldn't?!) and hate the medical field.
The problem is that you may have to go back to university to do a master's in data science or machine learning, which may take ~2 years. Then, alarm bells start ringing, and you realise it "may not be worth it to change."
Everyone's situation is different, but if you did go back to university and then spent a year getting your first data science job, you will only be 30, but you will have another three decades at least working in a job you truly enjoy.
You give up 3 years but will benefit from this for the rest of your life. In my opinion, it's worth the sacrifice.
I have met loads of software engineers, data scientists, and other tech-based professionals who didn't immediately enter this field in their early twenties. They did different things for a while and then transitioned into tech.
Needless to say, they all agree that this was a great decision and prefer their job now to before.
Of course, tech is not the only field that people get into later. That was just me speaking from experience. There are many other people I know who moved industries and are happier for it. Sure, it took some time, but for many of them, it was worth it.
I think Bill Gates summarised this point nicely when he said:
“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
Weekly Favourites ❤️
🎬 Video — Why You'll WASTE The Next 3 Years… I mean, this video can't be a weekly favourite as this whole newsletter is basically about it!
🔨 Tool — GPT-4o. OpenAI released a game-changer this week. This new multi-modal model means it can take text, speech, and visual data and respond to them through these modalities. The crazy part is that it is like talking to a human. You have to watch the video and try it to experience what I am talking about.
🎬 Video — Google I/O. Google held their annual I/O conference this week, and loads of new products and releases are coming. I particularly enjoyed the keynote speech from DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis.
